In the heart of post-war Beirut, amidst the rubble of a city rebuilding itself, Raed El Khazen discovered his true calling: music. It was a year after he first picked up the guitar, at the age of 19, when he made the bold decision to drop out of college and pursue his passion wholeheartedly.
Armed only with his guitar and a heart full of dreams, Raed embarked on a new journey, initially just playing in local bars and clubs. Little did he know, those early steps would lead him to receive a scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he would spend the next four years honing his craft. Surrounded by like-minded peers and immersed in a world of musical exploration, Berklee became a transformative chapter in Raed's life, shaping not only his skills but also his perspective.
Exchanging the scholarly environment of Boston for the vibrant scene of the Big Apple, Raed moved on to traversing the jazz clubs and recording studios in the world's most bustling musical scene for nearly a decade, playing alongside the likes of Avishai Cohen, Lionel Loueke, and Jojo Mayer, getting signed to Atlantic Records, and collaborating with a diverse array of musicians.
Upon returning to Beirut, he became an integral part of the region's burgeoning independent music scene. Mentoring and producing emerging talents—like Mashrou' Leila, Tanjaret Daghet, Hello Psychaleppo and Abanoub—Raed helped create new sounds that bridge the gap between cultural heritage and production innovation.
As a composer, Raed found a new avenue for expression, scoring films, documentaries, and commercials with his signature blend of cultural influences.
Yet, despite his success in the world of composition, Raed's love for performance remained undiminished, driving him to collaborate with a diverse array of artists, from Rim Banna, Julia Boutros and Michel Fadel to Ziad Rahbani, Fathi Salama, Fairuz and many others.
In 2016, Raed released his debut solo album, "Ghosts And Shadows," a reflection of his rich tapestry of experiences, influences and improvisational skills, all the while seamlessly blending elements of his time in both New York and Beirut.
With over 30 years of musical exploration across three continents under his belt, Raed continues to compose, perform his own music, produce new artists, and collaborate with musicians across different genres.
